I’ll begin here with the battleship, since that is my special snowflake model because it is big, badass, very pretty and reminds me of an old-school video game boss where you have to shoot off all the segments to win. And how better to do it than with a little tutorial of how I go about it? Now, more recently I picked myself up a battleship and some corvettes, neither of which were released with the initial Kickstarter and since I had created this blog I figured it would be a perfect time to start actually painting them all. So naturally I picked myself up a pretty hefty fleet right from the off and as is the nature of large bundles of miniatures, sat built but unpainted in my paint box for a few months. And that is not a word I have ever used before to describe something with tentacles. Then Dropfleet was announced on Kickstarter and I lost my mind over the Scourge ships. In all fairness, it is the most terrifying CD rack I’ve ever seen. Some of the vehicles do look a bit ridiculous at first glance – I thought the same thing – but they grew on me pretty fast. Scourge won though, because I’m just a bad guy at heart. I instantly fell in love with the look of the Scourge when I discovered Dropzone Commander – although I’ll admit it was a toss-up between them and the UCM. Almost as painful as having to listen to a One Direction song. Then along come the Scourge, another advanced alien race that lives a parasitic existence – the Scourge are basically intelligent jellyfish that bond with a hosts brain and nervous system, controlling them whilst also causing extreme agony. Along come the Shaltari, an advanced race who show humanity how to travel between the stars and help them colonise lots of planets. Hawk Wargames did a fantastic job of creating an insidious alien race for the Dropzone universe and managed to give them a unique background and aesthetic that made them utterly loathsome – perfect wargaming villains.įor those who don’t play Dropzone or Dropfleet, it’s set a few hundred years in the future when Mankind had managed to see aside their differences and became a united species.
